TURNER Encourages UK to Renew Arms Embargo on Iran
Last week, Congressman Mike Turner (OH-10) wrote to the United Kingdom’s (UK) Secretary of State for Defense urging them to join the United States in extending the arms embargo on Iran that the United Nations (UN) Security Council declined to extend.
“Provided the UN Security Council’s failure to renew the embargo, I am asking the UK to join us in seeking to extend the prohibition of arms sales to Iran,” said Turner. “Iran continues to violate the terms of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). An extension of the embargo is one step toward reimposing the sanctions put into place by the JCPOA to prevent Iran, the world’s largest exporter of state sponsored terrorism, from destabilizing the Middle East and putting a halt to its nuclear ambitions. Without any doubt, this is a necessary step that advances the mutual interests of the United Kingdom, the United States, and our allies.”
Turner serves as the Chairman of the Defense and Security Committee of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA), and has previously served as Chairman of NATO PA.
