Turner Secures First Round of Funding for $135M New Advanced Materials Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Mike Turner (OH-10) announced the approval of $135 million project for the construction of a new Advanced Materials Research Laboratory-C2A at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
“Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is the center of gravity for national security innovation, advanced research, and the future of the Air Force,” said Congressman Mike Turner. “This $135 million investment will ensure that AFRL has the modern facilities, laboratories, and infrastructure needed to continue leading the world in advanced materials and manufacturing research. I am proud to have secured this funding for Wright-Patt, for the Miami Valley, and for the men and women whose work strengthens America’s defense every day.”
The project will support the mission of the Air Force Research Laboratory Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, known as AFRL/RX, by constructing a new multi-story laboratory and research facility designed for advanced materials research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and next-generation defense innovation.
The new facility will include open interdisciplinary collaboration laboratories, clean utilities, vibration isolation, precision heating, ventilation, air conditioning and humidity controls, fire protection and suppression systems, and an intrusion detection system. The project also includes associated sitework, including a new parking lot, sidewalks connecting existing parking areas to the facility, and minor utility work.
The project will also construct new internal circulation bridges connecting Facilities 20653 to 20655 and Facility 20655 to the new laboratory. As part of the project, building 20654 will be demolished, utilities will be returned to the mains, and the site will be restored to green space.
“This project is about more than a building,” Congressman Turner continued. “It is about giving our scientists, engineers, researchers, and airmen the tools they need to solve some of the hardest problems facing our service men and women. From advanced materials to manufacturing breakthroughs, the work performed at Wright-Patt directly supports the safety of our service members and the security of our nation.”
The total estimated project cost is $135,000,000, including the first phase which is an estimated $6,418,638 for architectural and engineering services and construction design for which the Air Force has approved funding.
Turner has long been a leading advocate for Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Ohio’s military installations. Wright-Patt has doubled during his time in Congress and remains the largest single-site employer in Ohio.
“As Wright-Patt grows, the Miami Valley grows with it,” Congressman Turner said. “This investment will help protect our national defense advantage while supporting the jobs, research partnerships, and economic strength that make our region indispensable to the Air Force and to the country.”
