The oil spill, currently devastating the Gulf of Mexico and the coastline of several states, is an environmental and economic disaster. Even as BP, the affected states and the federal government try to contain the spill, there is an urgent need to discover what went wrong so we can prevent a similar crisis in the future. Simultaneously, there should be a full review of our initial response, because it is obvious we were unprepared. .

"Our thoughts and prayers are often with the brave men and women of our armed forces who serve overseas and here at home. It's all too easy to forget that many leave spouses and children at home while they carry out their sometimes dangerous duties. .

Since 1984, the Friday before Mother's Day has been designated as Military Spouse Appreciation Day. President Ronald Reagan designated the day to honor military spouses for the role they play in our nation's defense.

Following a meeting at the Pentagon today with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, U.S. Representatives Michael R. The National Day of Prayer has deep ties to the Miami Valley region and holds a great significance to me and to many citizens of the Third district of Ohio. .

Last week, U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb ruled our 59-year-old practice of holding a National Day of Prayer is unconstitutional. In her ruling, Judge Crabb agreed with the Madison, WI-based group The Freedom from Religion Foundation, which filed a lawsuit in federal court arguing that designating such a day violates the separation of church and state.
