For 75 years, Social Security has kept an estimated 40 percent of senior citizens out of poverty, and has given more than 90 percent of Americans age 65 and older, a stable source of income. No government program directly touches as many Americans as Social Security. .

On August 14, 1935, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law. This landmark legislation has provided our senior citizens with a basic level of retirement security for 75 years.

On July 26, the House of Representatives approved H.R. 1456, legislation I introduced earlier this year congratulating the University of Dayton's Men's Basketball team for winning the 2010 National Invitational Tournament (NIT). The bill passed unanimously, on a bipartisan basis, with the support of the entire Ohio delegation. .

The Boy Scouts instill in our youngest citizens values such as honesty, courage and resourcefulness, and emphasize the importance of doing "a good turn daily" for others. Each local Boy Scout Council obligates every Scout to perform 12 hours of community service annually. Last year, nearly three million Boy Scouts, and over one million adult leaders volunteered 36,653,936 hours of community service individually and through partnerships with organizations including the Salvation Army, the American Red Cross, and Habitat for Humanity. .
