Michael R. Turner and Niki Tsongas (D-MA) today introduced the Defense Sexual Trauma Response, Oversight and Good Governance Act (The Defense STRONG Act), bipartisan legislation to expand legal rights for service members who have been the victims of sexual assault, and to improve the training in the military related to prevention of this crime. .

The oil spill, currently devastating the Gulf of Mexico and the coastline of several states, is an environmental and economic disaster. Even as BP, the affected states and the federal government try to contain the spill, there is an urgent need to discover what went wrong so we can prevent a similar crisis in the future. Simultaneously, there should be a full review of our initial response, because it is obvious we were unprepared. .

"Our thoughts and prayers are often with the brave men and women of our armed forces who serve overseas and here at home. It's all too easy to forget that many leave spouses and children at home while they carry out their sometimes dangerous duties. .

Since 1984, the Friday before Mother's Day has been designated as Military Spouse Appreciation Day. President Ronald Reagan designated the day to honor military spouses for the role they play in our nation's defense.
