Today, Congressman Mike Turner (OH-3) released the following statement after voting in favor of a Balanced Budget Amendment to our Constitution. Turner is an original co-sponsor of the legislation, H.J.Res. 2.

“A Balanced Budget Amendment added to our Constitution would require that the President and Congress enact a budget which doesn’t spend more than we take in each year – except in time of war or national emergency. It’s a basic approach which the majority of hardworking American families adhere to. If you don’t have the money – you shouldn’t be spending it.

“I’ve voted against increasing our nation’s debt limit. If we require the government to live within its means, then we can begin to pay down the over $15 trillion in outstanding debt our country owes to its creditors. We cannot afford to continue without a limit on the amount we spend each budget year. Every man, woman, and child in America is responsible for over $46,000 of the national debt. A Constitutional requirement to balance the budget placed in the framework of our government is part of the solution to the stop the endless spending in Washington.”
