Earlier this week, Congressman Mike Turner (OH-10) honored distinguished high school students from his district who had submitted their work for the 2019 Congressional Art Competition. Three judges that were selected by the Dayton Art Institute reviewed each piece of art at a gallery event at the Dayton Art Institute and selected a winner.

“I am pleased to announce this year’s winning art piece for Ohio’s Tenth Congressional District: Reilly Stassienko’s Royalty Tasting the Essence of the Light Dimension,” said Turner. “This competition fosters the creativity of high school students across the Miami Valley. Visitors from across the country will see Reilly’s piece displayed in the U.S. Capitol for the next year. I congratulate Reilly on this huge artistic accomplishment, and thank every student who participated in this year’s competition.”

The winning piece, Reilly Stassienko’s “Royalty Tasting the Essence of the Light Dimension” will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one-year. Reilly, who is a 12th grade student at the Miami Valley Career Technology Center, painted her artwork in the medium of oil paint on canvas.

Second place went to Marie Gangloff, a 12th grader from Stivers School for the Arts, with the painting entitled “Cherry Tomato,” designed on the medium gouache painting.

Third place went to Chase Solberg, a 12th grader from Miami Valley Career Technology Center, with the piece entitled “Don’t Panic,” designed on the medium black and white colored pencil.

ABOUT THE CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.

Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.
