Congressman Mike Turner (OH-10) released the following statement after opposing the final passage of the National Defense Authorization Act of Fiscal Year 2020 in the House Armed Services Committee:
“After this long debate, the House Armed Services Committee was unable to reach an acceptable bipartisan resolution today.
As I laid out last week, this bill undermines our national security, weakens our defenses, and emboldens our adversaries to challenge us. The provisions that have been forced into the bill--provisions which make us less safe as a nation and ultimately led to today’s breakdown of the Committee--will not make it through conference or become law. Today was a political show of legislative malpractice.
I will work to the utmost of my ability for a final defense bill in conference that is something we can support on a bicameral and bipartisan basis.”
Turner serves as the Ranking Member on the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, a senior Member on the House Intelligence Committee, and Chairman of the Defense and Security Committee of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
