Today, Congressman Mike Turner (OH-10) joined a majority of members in the House of Representatives in passing the permanent reauthorization of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund through fiscal year 2090. Turner was an early co-sponsor of the bill this Congress.
“Our country owes a debt of gratitude to the brave law enforcement and first responders who courageously sacrificed their well-being to save the lives of so many Americans when we were under attack by terrorists,” said Turner. “I have long supported the permanent reauthorization of the 9/11 victims compensation fund and was an early co-sponsor of this bill. Today the House acted to ensure these men and women receive the compensation they deserve. I am so pleased this distinct group of law enforcement and first responders will no longer have to live in limbo. I sincerely thank them for their bravery and service.”
The Never Forget the Heroes: Permanent Authorization of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund Act would:
- Provide funding for victims through FY2090,
- Allow claims to be filed until October 2089,
- Require VCF policies and procedures to be reassessed at least once every five years (currently, at least once annually),
- Require claimants to be paid for the amount by which a claim was reduced on the basis of insufficient funding,
- Remove the cap on noneconomic damages in certain circumstances, and
- Adjust the annual limit on economic loss compensation for inflation.
