Turner (middle) holds press conference with Major General Cooley (right center) and President Jackson- Hammond (left center) to highlight the Department of Defense’s Investment into Historically Black Colleges like Central State University.
Last week Congressman Mike Turner (OH-10), alongside Central State University President Dr. Cynthia Jackson-Hammond and Major General William T. Cooley, highlighted the Department of Defense’s investment into Historically Black Colleges (HBCU). Turner co-sponsored an amendment in the House version of this year’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that urges the formation of the National Security Commission on Defense Research Conducted by HBCUs and Minority Institutions to encourage the work and further the partnership between the DOD and Central State University. The commission will address inequality in defense funding and identify ways to build research capacity at HBCUs and other minority institutions.
“Since being federally recognized as an 1890 Land Grant Institution, Central State was unfairly being left out of certain funding opportunities because of how it was designated,” Turner said. “The amendment I co-sponsored with Representative Anthony Brown included in this year’s defense bill would require the Secretary of Defense to expand the research capability of Historically Black Colleges like Central State University. Today’s announcement is a huge win not only for Central State but for our community. The money included in this grant will be used to continue the vital research already being conducted at the university, and I am incredibly proud of the work and research being done here.
Background:
Turner co-sponsored an amendment in the House version of the annual defense bill that urges the Department of Defense to continue funding for the Center of Excellence efforts at Central State University.
This month, the Department of Agriculture notified Central State they have been awarded a total of $6 million dollars in federal grants funds. These federal funds will be equally matched by the state of Ohio. In total, Central State is set to receive approximately $12 million in grant funding. The grant is a 7.4 million dollar increase in funding since the last fiscal year.
In Fiscal Year 2018, Central State received approximately $1.2 and $1.1 million in federal dollars for each grant program. The State of Ohio matches those funds thus raising the total amount for FY18 to approximately $4.6 million dollars.
