Dayton, OH- Today, Congressman Mike Turner (OH-10) announced that he is pursuing $2 million in federal funding in the House Labor, Health and Human Services, Education Appropriations bill for Dayton Foodbank. If approved by the full Congress, the funding will be used to construct an additional building that will include exam rooms and other resources for the food bank. The committee-passed appropriations bill awaits full consideration in the House when Congress returns in November.
"The Dayton Foodbank's $2 million expansion would eliminate barriers to healthcare and create jobs, all while keeping members of the community fed, " said Rep Turner. "Advocating for this $2 million in federal funding allows me to provide for an organization that is constantly giving back to our community. I am proud to represent Dayton Foodbank and look forward to seeing how this funding allows this phenomenal organization to impact the Miami Valley region for years to come, should it pass the House."
"It was wonderful to welcome Congressman Turner and his staff for a tour of The Foodbank's facility, and for this opportunity to express our thanks in person for his support of The Foodbank's Community Project Funding request, which will make lasting social change through reentry services, workforce development initiatives, increased access to healthcare services, and other critical wrap-around services," said Michelle Riley, President and CEO of Dayton Foodbank. "We are grateful to Congressman Turner for advancing this project as it will go beyond providing food assistance to those in our line- it will work to shorten the line altogether."
Background:
The Dayton Foodbank has served as the primary source of hunger relief for the Miami Valley region for 40 years. The additional funding will allow the foodbank to partner with local hospitals to provide on-site care and additional health resources to underserved communities after receiving emergency food assistance with the aim of minimizing the barriers to accessing services due to transportation, time, and other constraints. Additionally, the building will provide space for managed care providers to ensure that their customers are taking advantage of the benefits they are eligible for through their insurance plan.
