Dayton, OH - U.S. Congressman Mike Turner (OH-10) is returning from a CODEL to the Balkans including stops in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Serbia, and Kosovo. In Bosnia, Congressman Turner was awarded the title "Honorary Citizen of the City of Sarajevo" for his efforts in fostering lasting transatlantic relations between the United States and BiH. Congressman Turner also joined High Representative Schmidt for the dedication of the Dayton Peace Square in Sarajevo, marking the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Accords and emphasizing the ongoing need for peace and stability in the region.
"My visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina and the honor of being recognized as an Honorary Citizen of Sarajevo underscore the vital importance of sustained engagement and cooperation in preserving peace and stability in the region. These efforts remind us of the continuous work required to secure the future of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and they reflect the enduring legacy of the Dayton Peace Accords on its people," said Congressman Mike Turner.
Congressman Turner's visit underscores the enduring significance of the Dayton Peace Accords, signed 30 years ago in his hometown of Dayton, Ohio, which brought peace to the Bosnian region. During his trip, Turner engaged in diplomatic meetings as part of a broader effort to reinforce the peace established by the Dayton Peace Accords.
This past spring, Turner hosted leaders from the Balkans, including BiH, at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Spring Session in Dayton, emphasizing the fragility of peace in the region. The five days of diplomatic meetings concluded with the Concert for Peace, which served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing work needed to maintain stability and foster cooperation between the two sister cities.
Turner's commitment to the relationship between Dayton and Sarajevo extends beyond diplomatic engagements. He has been instrumental in establishing cultural exchanges, educational programs, and support for democratic institutions between the two cities. His efforts have strengthened the bonds between the United States and BiH, promoting mutual understanding and cooperation.
