Since 1984, the Friday before Mother’s Day has been designated as Military Spouse Appreciation Day. President Ronald Reagan designated the day to honor military spouses for the role they play in our nation’s defense.
Congressman Mike Turner, whose district includes many military families - including those stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base – took time to mark the day by issuing the following statement:
“Our thoughts and prayers are often with the brave men and women of our armed forces who serve overseas and here at home. It’s all too easy to forget that many leave spouses and children at home while they carry out their sometimes dangerous duties.
“Military spouses also play a role in our nation’s defense by taking on family responsibilities that are normally shared. On this Friday before Mother’s Day I hope everyone can take a moment to remember this quiet effort and if you know a military spouse to thank them for their contribution to our common defense.”
