DAYTON, OHIO – Today, Congressman Mike Turner (OH-10) announced that over $14 million in federal funds were awarded to Miami Valley Child Development Centers (MVCDC) to serve children from low-income families receiving childcare subsidies. MVCDC, which serves over 2,500 families across Congressman Turner’s district, was allocated funds under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Fiscal Year 2024 Head Start Projects grant program. This funding will be spent over the next five years to support MVCDC’s mission.
In November 2023, Congressman Turner wrote a letter to the Administration for Children and Families’ Office of Head Start to support MVCDC’s application to continue as the grantee for Head Start and Early Head Start services in Montgomery, Clark, and Madison Counties.
“I’m proud to continue supporting Miami Valley Child Development Centers’ work to improve the lives of low-income children and their families. This funding will directly help children to start kindergarten socially, emotionally, and academically on track. Beyond the high-quality early education it offers, MVCDC plays a key role in helping families become financially stable and independent,” said Congressman Mike Turner.
Background:
MVCDC is Dayton’s largest Head Start provider and services more than 2,500 families annually.
MVCDC works holistically with each child and family, taking a balanced approach to parent involvement, health, nutrition, social competency, literacy, and numeracy development.
MVCDC is also a leader in the Head Start community in Ohio. It has been selected for expansion funding, specifically for Early Head Start services.
Recently, the national Office of Head Start awarded it $9 million to consolidate and expand services at a new state-of-the-art early learning center in a historically under-resourced neighborhood in East Dayton.
MVCDC collaborates with various organizations to ensure children and families get the resources they need and leverage philanthropic and tax dollars.
In March 2018, Congressman Turner wrote a letter supporting MVCDC’s successful $25 million grant application to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In August 2018, MVCDC received the initial installment of the grant of $12.3 million. On September 15, 2023, MVCDC received the balance of the $25 million award.
In January 2024, Congressman Turner announced more than $2.5 million in federal funding for Miami Valley Child Development Centers.
