WASHINGTON, DCCongressman Mike Turner, on May 20, 2022, graduated from Georgetown University with a Doctorate in Liberal Studies. The focus of Turner’s research is urban economic development.

Turner, the former two-term Mayor of Dayton Ohio, enrolled in the part-time program to continue his work and research on improving the economic performance and sustainability of urban core cities. His Doctoral thesis, entitled: “Urban Fail,” reviews the historical evolution of federal urban development policy and how current policies inhibit capitalistic development outcomes in American urban core cities.

Turner, the ranking member on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, has a national security focused congressional portfolio. Turner cites his time as Dayton’s Mayor as the impetus for his work in the program at Georgetown University.

Turner said:

“When I served as Mayor of my hometown, Dayton, Ohio, we were able to turn the city around, increase investment, attract new housing and redevelop the downtown-with a new performing arts center, baseball stadium and Riverscape attraction. Still, like all American urban core cites, Dayton struggles and I believe federal policies inhibit urban economic growth. My thesis advocates changing these policies.”

Congressman Turner, who supports life-long learning and higher education, balanced work, school, and life to complete the program while serving in the US House of Representatives.
