Today Congressman Mike Turner released the following statement on expanding the U.S.-Russia New START treaty:

“As the last remaining nuclear weapons agreement between the U.S. and Russia, President Biden knows he can’t let the clock run out on New START. While I agree with Biden’s efforts to extend this treaty rather than letting it expire, I am concerned with the length of extension given Russia’s continued undertaking of massive modernization and its building of new capabilities that leaves out entire classes of nuclear weapons,” said Turner. “Looking ahead, President Biden and his administration must engage in renewed negotiations, which should include China, to curtail an international arms race and enhance global security.”

Congressman Turner is a member of the House Armed Service Committee and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, where he has jurisdiction over the nation’s nuclear arsenal, the Department of Defense’s intelligence programs, and also over missile defense systems. He is also a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
